I’m new to the RPI universe and would like recomendations for a RPI-4, case and fan, add on boards as required, HDMI, and a OS (Raspbian or Windows IoT Core?). I’m most familar with Ubuntu for desk top, and have writen hamlib add ons.

I’m building a portable station around a IC-7100 and plan to use the RPI-4 for FT-8 and rig control to support logging on other modes, especially CW.

There are numerous web sites, a wide range of prices, and a lot to choose from, especially for cases.

      Thanks in advance!

I have been using RPi’s for a few years now.  I recently decided to get an RPi 4 and read that they generate a lot of heat so I looked for a RPi and a case with a fan.  I found the “CanaKit Raspberry Pi 4 4GB Basic Starter Kit with Fan” for a very reasonable price, $80, and I see it is now $85 and still a good deal.

        Hi Hamilton,

There are lots of good case choices. Here’s one that we’ve used with some good results.

Raspberry Pi 4B Case with Fan

This is the 4B version of the case that we used for our video players at HamXposition.

        Have fun!

Fred’s recommendation looks like a good one. My only issue with some of the standard “cases with fans” is that sometimes they tend to be a little too noisy. I modified a case recently to add a Sunon MagLev fan, and an adjustable switch mode power supply so that I could run the fan slower and quieter. Depending on your environment, this may not be a problem for you. But, just in case, you can find information on it at the bottom of this page. http://www.davesmotleyprojects.com/ham/rpi-gqrx-fm/index.html

This page is a little outdated, but you may still want to take a look at it for installing Rasbian, and doing things like disabling screen blanking. Hopefully it’s helpful.  http://www.davesmotleyprojects.com/raspi/proj_ready/raspbian_jessie/raspbian-jessie.html

          Good luck on your project!

            A. Cases….

Trying 3 different ones on pi4.  Can report the first one is definitely quiet, but some of the “guts” stick out.  The 2nd one you can “hear” the fan, but not too loud.  The third one I will try next… have it, but not yet done the “transplant” as I only have 2 pi4’s… I think the 3rd is similar to the one Fred points out but with a 35mm fan vs 30mm with the link he provided per the Q&A on that page. :

            B. The 7100 project…

Interested in this… I have this rig and though currently focused on the McHF clone (RS918) I do “have it on the list” to build some type of gobox for the 7100.  Maybe we can chat during this Sat Breakfast if you are going or at next club meetup.

Progress, I have wsjt-x running on the RPI-4.

Now, I’m looking for a Raspbian 10  Buster compatible Logging program.
