Fall 2020 Amateur Radio License Classes

The Nashua Area Radio Society will hold three Amateur Radio License Classes this fall. Due to COVID-19, we will be holding them online, and they are open to anyone in the US.

Here are the dates for our classes:

Our classes will be held using Zoom web conferencing.

Classes are based on the Gordon West License Class Manuals.  We go over each question on the exam at least twice and give lots of demos to reinforce the materials.

Our knowledgeable instructors have given 6-7 amateur radio license classes per year for the past 5 years.  We have had a high success rate with our amateur radio license classes and have received much positive feedback from our students.

We are working to implement an online exam at the end of our classes as we have in the past.  It will take some effort to put this in place but we will make every attempt to have this ready for the Fall classes.

September 2020 Membership Renewals

Close to 40% of our members are up for renewal in the month of September.  We encourage those members to renew early,  beat the rush, and make sure your membership does not expire.  This article will show you how to tell when your membership is up for renewal. It will also show you how to renew your NARS membership online.

You can visit the following page to see when your membership is up for renewal: https://www.n1fd.org/member-directory/.   Scroll to the 2nd table on the page, titled Membership Roster and Status, put your callsign in the search box, and hit return.  As you can see above, I have looked up my membership status and I see that my membership is expiring in September 2021.

How to Renew Your Membership

To renew your membership, the first step is to log in to N1FD.org.  Once you are logged in, you can fill out the membership renewal form on the following page:  https://www.n1fd.org/renew-your-membership/.  At the end of the form, you will be asked to pay your membership fee using PayPal.

We have multiple membership renewal options to choose from if you qualify, with the following yearly fees.  Make sure you take advantage of a discounted rate if you qualify:

  • Regular Membership:  $31
  • Senior Membership (Age 65 or over): $26
  • Full-Time Student: $26
  • Family Membership: $46

Your membership in the Nashua Area Radio Society also supports our education and youth outreach work including:

  • Amateur Radio Licensing class delivery and scholarships for students, teachers, and young people
  • STEM Education for school students through Amateur Radio (ex. our High-Altitude Balloon program)
  • Activities to introduce young people and new Hams to Amateur Radio such as ARRL Kids Day, ARRL Rookie Roundup, and other youth outreach activities

Student Teacher Contest Update!

The Student Teacher Contest Results have been updated with results from (ARRL) Summer Field Day and the 13 Colonies Special Event.  We have a new leader, Keith Sangillo, KC1IMK!

Keith, KC1IMK and Abby, AB1BY operated remotely from the AB1OC/AB1QB station during Summer Field Day as part of the AB1QB entry.  They also operated as K2K during the recent 13 Colonies Special Event.

Student Teacher Contest Update

With a great entry from the 13 Colonies Special Event of 281 non-duplicate QSOs in 3 hours, Keith, KC1IMK has pulled ahead of Abby, AB1BY.  The competition is still neck and neck – Keith has a score of 1208 and Abby’s score is 1180.

The contest score is the sum of QSOs made in a contestant’s top 4 entries.  Both Keith and Abby have reached more than 4 entries with the latest entries.  Now each of them needs to improve on their previous scores to pull ahead.  Full results and rules for the competition can be found at Student-Teacher Contest Series.

Next Opportunity

The North American QSO Party (NAQP) – SSB is coming up on August 15th,  With its 100 watt power limit, it will be a great opportunity for contestants to increase their scores.
