2020 Field Day Results

The ARRL has published the 2020 Field Day Results in the December 2020 Issue of QST.

Field Day 2020 Rule Changes

Due to the pandemic, the ARRL made two rule changes this year.  The first is that stations in category 1D could contact other 1D stations.  The second is that individual submissions could specify a club affiliation and scores would be aggregated by club.

Virtual Site Visit on Zoom
Virtual Site Visit on Zoom

NARS held several activities to help members operating in Field Day to earn bonus points toward their scores.  A virtual site visit via Zoom with Gary Gasdia (father of member Ryan, KC1KJS), who is a member of the Hudson School Board and Community Emergency Response Team Members Patrick, W1YTT, Joe, AC1BG and Dan, W1MUZ helped members with bonus points.  Sterling, AK1K, trained us all and hosted a messaging net to help us get the messaging bonus.   These bonus points helped to increase our score.

Field Day 2020 Scores

Thanks to all of our members who submitted their scores for the Nashua Area Radio Society, our efforts resulted in a total club score of 14,952.  From a quick scan of the line scores published by the ARRL and back of the envelope calculation, we placed in the top 3% of all clubs!

Winter Field Day 2021

Winter Field Day is coming up on January 30-31.  Similar rule changes have been made due to the pandemic.  If you are interested in operating on Winter Field Day, review and reply to Craig, N1SFT’s post in the Field Day Forum.  Also, plan to join our January Membership Meeting, where Craig will talk about Winter Field Day.

Configuring Emails from Our Forums

We have recently added some new features related to our Forums and some members may be getting more emails from the website.  Here is some information on how you can control the emails that you receive that result from Forum Posts.

There are two types of emails associated with forum posts – Individual Emails are sent with each post or reply.  Digests, are sent periodically and contain all forum posts and replies since the last Digest that was sent.

By default, new Members and Internet Subscribers are setup to be subscribed to all forums.  If you are subscribed to a forum, you will receive an email for each new post or reply.

Limiting Individual Forum Emails

You can change which individual emails that you have signed up for by logging into the website and following the steps below.  You can also change the frequency that you receive digests.

Click on your name where you login

  3. If you do not want to receive emails for every new post in a forum, you can click on the pink box with the X in it next to the Forum name to unsubscribe from that forum. We recommend you do not unsubscribe from the General Information Forum as that is where we send information about our meetings and events and those may be time-critical.  We also recommend that members do not unsubscribe from the Members Forum for the same reason.

Online Technician Class

We held our first Online Technician License Class and Exam Session on September 26th and 27th.  The Nashua Area Radio Society is holding all of our license classes online using Zoom conferencing this fall due to the pandemic.  We are also able to give the Technician Exam to our students at the end of our class.  This has also allowed us to provide our license classes and exams to students across the US.

The online technician class was a success!  All three students earned their Technician License.   We kept this class small as it was our first try at a remote video license exam.

Congratulations to new Hams and License Class Grads:

  • Heather Hunter
  • Barbara Smith
  • Chris Holjes

All three students are now either club members or internet subscribers.

We had a surprise visitor on Saturday afternoon of the class as Gordon West, WB6NOA, showed up on Zoom to provide some encouraging words to the prospective new Hams and instructors.

Thanks to our great team of instructors and volunteer examiners who helped to make the class and exam a success:

Our next class will be the General License class, scheduled for October 25th and 26th.  For more information including the link to register for a License Class see https://www.n1fd.org/amateur-radio-license-class/
