Please let the Lyndhurst Stem Club know how much I enjoyed the article on the history of the car radio. For about four years, I worked for the auto amplifier division of the Bose Corporation of Framingham and Stow, Massachusetts. You might like to know that in our power amps, the audio signal was completely digitized within the amps and special software was used to help perfect every aspect of the sound being sent to the speakers. Such devices were used as RPM motor sensors to help filter out noise produced by the engine. Also, there was a tiny microphone placed in the cabin of the car to help to pick up certain kinds of noises which the software of the power amps also helped to filter out. As your article indicated, so much wonderful technology has been developed over the years for car audio. Thanks again for sharing. Randall N1KRB.

There are so many moving parts to a project like this, that it becomes a wonderful display of so many skill sets. I’m sure the staff and students of BG are very appreciative of the team at NARS. I look forward to the next “space chat”.
BTW – its was quite something to find out how clear the ISS crew member could be heard outside with just an HT. However, for the next ISS contact, could you plan for warmer weather?

It was a wonderful display of technology and professionalism, coupled with the pride and enthusiasm of the students in their interest in their school work and with STEM.
A neighbor of mine is on the board of BG and she complimented NARS for all of their good work on this project.
Well done – Randall – N1KRB
I wrote an article several months ago about experimenting with Digital Voice using what is called a Jumbo Hotspot, comprising of the MMDVM and a Raspberry Pi boards and running the Pi-Star program. It only operated on the UHF band, as I recall.
The prices of this units runs between about $ 75 to $ 100 depending on who you buy them from. I bought mine off of Ebay from a Chinese source for $ 74 and it took about 2 weeks to arrive. You can buy them from US distributors, ready to ship immediately, closer to the $ 100.
The one I bought required you to provide your own 5v power supply.
Feel free to reach out to me directly is you have any questions –

Thanks Fred – that makes sense. My long wire antenna is only 35 off the ground. I’m sure if I could get it higher, I could hear some of the distance stations better.
Sometimes when I participate with the 10 meter net, there are stations I hear for the obvious reasons – those stations are particularly next door to me. However, some are harder to hear or I do not hear at all.
What kind of antenna would it require to hear those stations calling in from out of state or several towns away?
Thanks – Randall – N1KRB, Nashua

Chris McAleer(D)I received a note from Representative Max Abramson yesterday regarding the letter I sent him. He has friend who is a ham but was surprised to hear about all emergency communication capabilities offered by ham radio operators such as email through Winlink. or being able to type/receive messages with RTTY and PSK31.
He also was impressed to hear how much groups like the BAA rely on hams for the Boston Marathon.
I did ask him about the outcome of yesterday’s meeting, He did not say exactly – However it must have been favorable. He indicated there would be another meeting in about a month.
