Thanks for posting Wayne. You are right, if you have a good antenna, you can go a very long way using QRP. Adding CW to the mix helps even more. One of my longest contacts ever was to Western Australia which is about 1/2 way around to world from here. I made it using CW and 5w. That works about to a little over 2,000 mi/watt.
When I first read the title of this forum I thought that maybe CW and QRP was a choice of one or the other. Then I thought, ‘Nah, couldn’t be.’. I’ve been a member of NEQRP (The New England QRP Club) for several years now and almost every person I’ve met uses CW. When you’re operating with 5 watts, usually considerably less, CW will make the trip when phone such as SSB can’t get through the noise.
Last year I watched a friend make contact from Dover NH to Russia on about 3 1/2 watts. Even that was probably more than he needed. Another friend operates pedestrian mobile on the beach in Hampton NH. With 3 or so watts and an antenna sticking out of his backpack he frequently contacts Europe.
Check into it. You may find that you don’t really need that new amp after all.
