We have been trying for some time to capture a video of our a High-Altitude Balloon Bursting at the edge of space… Turn up your speakers and play the video above – you are in for a treat!

Thanks to everyone who helped to make our HAB-4 launch today a success. More video and pictures to come.

Yay!  Glad we finally caught the burst.  After other things went awry this made my day.  Thanks again to the Nashua Area Radio Society and all the Hudson Memorial and Bishop Guertin students that came out to this awesome event.

I wanted to update everyone on the final outcome of HAB-4’s flight.

Our HAB landed west of Worcester at about 1:35 pm this afternoon. We located it quickly but it was about 60 ft up in a large tree. It took Curtis quite a while to get it out of the tree. Our HAB was in good shape with no damage.

Our camera insulation system helped! Our “lucky looking up” camera stayed on for a good portion of the flight. Check out the following link in the post above for some amazing video.

The looking out camera shut off early again so we have some more work to do there. We captured some good video of the launch and the first 45,000 ft of the flight. More to come there.

Based upon the pressure and temperature telemetry data, we are estimating that our HAB burst at about 115,000 ft. We found that the HAB’s computer, GPS, and APRS transmitter were fine after we reset the flight computer when we got the HAB back. We have some more detective work to do but we will most likely replace the computer and the GPS for the next flight. All in all, HAB-4 was a successful flight and we have learned a good bit.

We’ll clean up the data and do some work on a nice video after Field Day and we’ll certainly share all of this will you in the coming weeks.

Thank you to everyone who helped make HAB-4 and amazing experience and a special thanks to Curtis for scaling the 60 ft tree to get our HAB back!

Beautiful!   Did you heat the camera?

We build a simple insulation system which included small hand warmers. Here’s a link to an article the give some details.

Wow, it is a surprisingly violent event.  We see the average motion due to the burst which is pretty wild. I wonder what the peak impact is.

The initial acceleration as it falls and as the air density increases would be interesting and good science.

Maybe it is time to add a 3 axis accelerometer.

You guys did another great flight. I was tracking it from Fernandina Beach Florida on my iPhone. Gotta love technology.

Congratulations! Spectacular footage of the burst. Great work by you and the students. Should be great fun analyzing the data and the video.
