      With field day just a few weeks away it is time to get warmed up.

      There is a program called Morse Runner that does a good job of emulating a contest down to the N1MM+ like interface for logging.

      There are several good demos on YouTube. Just search for Morse Runner. The free download is at http://www.dxatlas.com/morserunner/

      You can add in QRM/N, QSB, even Lids, and dial in how deep you want the pileups to be including my favorite, none.  Even without selecting these things the signal is realistic with some noise, fade and occasionally a little adjacent channel interference. Also, the tone varies with each contact.

      I spend 1 hour a day, my Q rate has gone up and the number of busted calls down. For the newbie, it also exposes you to a wide range of DX calls that can disrupt your flow if you haven’t heard them before. Especially those starting with numbers, having two numbers, or / info.

      It will also emulate a WPX and HST (IARU) contests.

      PLATFORMS

      – Windows 95/98/ME/NT4/2000/XP/W7/W10;
      – works on Linux systems under WINE
