LEO Satellite Contacts via Easy Sat and Linear Transponder Satellites

We recently did a Tech Night on Building and Operating a Satellite Ground Station. As part of my portion of our Tech Night presentation, I recorded several LEO Satellite Contacts and made videos showing the operation of the computer controlling our Satellite Station 2.0 during these contacts. These videos give an idea of what it’s like to operate through LEO satellites.

The video above is a recording of several contacts through SO-50 – an FM “Easy Sat”.

The video bove demonstrates several contacts made through FO-29, a linear transponder satellite.

The distortion that you hear in my voice is a result of my own voice coming back delayed through the satellites.

We will have our Satellite Station 2.0 setup at Field Day this year. If you are local to Nashua, NH; you are welcome to visit us during Field Day and see our Satellite Station in operation.

CQ WW WPX Contest

This past weekend Abby, AB1BY and I participated in the CQ WPX contest working mobile!  My mobile set up consists of the Icom IC-7100 and various hamsticks We took part only to have fun and to increase our totals towards our DXCC and we did both! We totaled right around 50 contacts for the weekend which we thought was really good seeing that we only worked when we had to go somewhere in the car and I was at work all day on Sunday.

This was a great contest for us as many of the big stations were out and not only do they put out a great signal, for the most part, they hear very good as well! We were actually able to work 20 meters the whole time and we were on late on Friday night and still making good contacts. I would encourage anyone that is new or has a young ham that is showing some interest in the hobby to get involved in one of these contests as a leisurely participant. It’s fairly easy to make contacts and it’s great for DX.

Some of the places we worked:

Ireland, Northern Ireland, Bonaire, Puerto Rico, Cape Verde, Manitoba, France, Germany, Italy, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Netherlands, Venezuela, Spain, Slovak Republic, Russia, Aruba, California and Pepperell, Massachusetts!

Like to chase DX?  There is quite a bit of good DX on the air this week.  I just worked 5U5R from Niger, which was an ATNO (All Time New One) for me!  9N7EI from Nepal and TU7C from Cote D’Ivoire are also on the air.

The DX World website has a calendar for the month which shows all of the DXpeditions for the month.  It also has announcements for upcoming DXpeditions.
