What They Are

Electronic mailing lists (sometimes called "remailers") are just what they sound like. They are are distribution lists for electronic mail messages. What makes them nifty is that there is automated "list server" software out there that makes it very easy to add or remove yourself to a list, and to send mail to everyone on the list.

Lists tend to be organized for a specific purpose. For example, the ky1n-list exists to distribute the KY1N Amateur examination list. It is considered bad etiquette to send mail to a list that does not relate to the purpose of the list.

How to subscribe and unsubscribe

Most lists are fully automated. You must follow the appropriate command syntax to subscribe and unsubscribe from the list. Requests are usually sent to the list server with the desired request in the body of the message. Subject lines tend to be ignored, although to be safe you can put the request in both places.

Never send a subscribe or unsubscribe request to the list itself! This will only be mailed to everyone on the list and will only annoy people.

The usual destination address for requests is of the form majordomo@majordomo.whatever.com, where listserver.whatever.com is replaced with the actual location of the list. For example, Netcom supports many mailing lists and requests are sent to "majordomo@majordomo.netcom.com". Some older list server software may expect an address of the form listserver@whatever.com.

In the description of the commands below items contained in []'s are optional. When providing the item, do not include the []'s around it.

subscribe <list> [<address>] Subscribe yourself (or <address> if specified) to the named <list>.
unsubscribe <list> [<address>] Unsubscribe yourself (or <address> if specified) from the named <list>.
which [<address>] Find out which lists you (or <address> if specified) are on.
who <list> Find out who is on the named <list>.
info <list> Retrieve the general introductory information for the named <list>.
lists Show the lists served by this Majordomo server.
help Retrieve a help message.
get <list> <filename> Get a file related to <list>.
index <list> Return an index of files you can "get" for <list>.
end Stop processing commands (useful if your mailer adds a signature).

Not all commands are supported by all list servers.

If you have any questions or problems with a particular mailing list, you can often contact the list owner at "owner-<list name>@majordomo.whatever.com".

For problems with a Majordomo server itself, you would contact "Majordomo-Owner@majordomo.whatever.com".

How to use them

Using a mailing list is easy. Once on the list, you will receive anything sent to the list. To send to the list you would send email to "<list name>@majordomo.whatever.com". Note that not all mailing lists are "open". Some are limited as to who can post to the list. For example, the ky1n-list is a limited list. Only the list owner and the list maintainer can post to the list. All others are rejected.

Our very own mailing list

The Nashua Area Radio Club has its own remailer. Having explained all about automatic mailing lists above, none of it applies to the NARC list. It is a manual list, maintained by Joel Levin, KD1ON.

Joel, KD1ON manually updates it so there is no specific format for the request. You just ask. But it would probably make sense to use the standard formats in case it ever becomes automated.

If you want to subscribe, send an email either to narc-request@bbn.com or to levin@bbn.com asking to be put on the NARC list.

Using the automatic format you would put in the body of the message the single line:

subscribe narc

Once on the list, sending email to the address narc@bbn.com will result in it going to every person who has subscribed to the NARC mailing list.

And lots of others...

Here's some mailing lists. The first column is the name of the list. The second column is the destination for the subscribe requests, and the third column is a description.
