Quorum needed!

My 2 Cents Worth

An editorial message from Jim Heedles, WW1Y

No business was conducted at the last club meeting because there was not enough voting members to constitute a quorum. The club constitution requires 25% of the voting membership. While this is a high percentage it has not been a problem when the club was smaller. Most social organizations and many political ones use a much smaller percentage or absolute number. The English Parliament's 450 member House Of Lords only requires three members for a quorum. At the August meeting there were 147 paid up voting members making a quorum 37.

In order to correct this problem a change to the club constitution must be made changing the quorum requirements. This involves submitting a written proposal at a meeting, notifying the membership by mail (through the newsletter) of an upcoming vote on an amendment, and then voting on the proposed change at a following meeting.

A written proposal to modify the quorum requirements will be submitted at the September meeting. It will be voted upon at the October meeting. Assuming we can get a quorum at BOTH of those meetings!

This is a fairly critical change and it needs to be made quickly. The preliminary budget is presented in October and November, and club elections and budget approval take place in December. Without a budget for 2000, there will be no newsletters, no Field Day expenditures, not much of anything.

So please make an effort to show up at the next two meetings and support the constitutional amendment. Then you can go back to your usual modus operandi.
