NARC club member, Gordon (Geep) Howell, WA4RTS along with Brian Justin, WA1ZMS and Doug Sharp, K2AD have achieved the first VUCC award on the 4mm band (75 GHz). They also tied the existing 75 GHz world distance record of 114 km.
As Geep reports: "Making contacts on 75 GHz takes a lot of patience, a good compass, and plenty of room to spread out the stuff. Brian WA1ZMS built up two stations using 1 foot parabolic dishes with feedhorns that he acquired and modified to work, an ICOM R7000 receiver for the IF, the electronics box, another box with an oscillator that helps you figure out where you might be on the band, a big battery to run the whole thing, and lots of cables. CW was used exclusively because for the longest QSOs there wasn’t enough signal margin for a voice contact. It was lots of fun. Now that 75 has been conquered, ‘ZMS is shooting for 143 GHz for the next hill to climb. "
