Thoughts and Ruminations from
our "Fearless Leader"

Retraction

Sometimes even the best-intentioned of us do not always get it right. I know I sure don’t. In an effort to prevent the Classy Junque drawing from getting too lengthy, the Board decided to implement three common sense rules. These rules were never meant to be insulting or offensive to anyone under any circumstances. The fact that the Board even considered rules is a direct result of a failure on my part to maintain better meeting control. For this I apologize to all members and to visitors who had to suffer through it. I am, therefore, suspending those rules for the time being. In turn, I’d like to ask you to help me by entering only your own name for the drawing if you choose to participate, and by removing any leftover items after the meeting. Thanks folks & again, my apologies.

Y2K Right Here in River City

While the last thing that most of us want to think about is the Y2K issue, it is real, and it does loom ahead. Don KA1GOZ, our EC tells me that the City of Nashua has begun preliminary Y2K contingency planning and a “First Night 2000” celebration on Main Street on New Years. At the moment the talk is to have the Nashua EOC up and operational on New Years Eve, with amateur radio operators in strategic locations throughout the city. EOC activation would only last until 1 AM or so on New Year’s morning if no major glitches are discovered. I would imagine that other cities and towns across the State of New Hampshire are also beginning to think about contingency planning for Y2K, and perhaps First Night as well, especially Manchester, Concord, Portsmouth, etc. I stress that planning has just begun, and nothing is “cast in stone”.

One easy way we can help out is to get into the habit of checking into our ARES Net each Tuesday evening at 8 PM. The net meets on the Nashua repeater (147.045+/224.28-). NCS is usually Don. Over the next nine months Don will be keeping us filled in on the planning for this major one-time event. The combined Y2K Contingency/First Night event might be an excellent way we, as a club, could do some real good for the community, and have some fun at the same time. How about a bash for participants after the uproar dies down? Anyway, it’s something to think about.

Hope to see you, Tuesday evenings, 8 PM
