Several months ago, the Nashua Area Radio Club was invited to participate in a Boy Scout Explorer Post sponsored by Sanders. Several members got together with Steve Uurtamo, WA4LDL, Senior Post Advisor, to see what the Club could do to help. Explorer Post 200 was setup to provide a bridge for young adults between their high school curriculum and a post-high school technical education. At the first meeting Steve and the others were pleased by the turn out of over 100 students willing to participate. Since this is the startup year of the Post, Steve and other Sanders employees decided to teach the basics of computer repair and Amateur Radio. The young adults had a choice of one, or the other, or both. This is where the Club comes in. Along with the Sanders employees, some club members including Tracy Banks, N1WIR, and Barry Whittemore, WB1EDI, will be on hand to “Elmer”, or help, the 30 or so students learn Amateur Radio. Steve and Shannon Coyle, the Explorer Field Representative thought it would be helpful for some of the people to attend the June meeting of the Nashua Area Radio Club and the annual Field Day event. In addition some of them will have the opportunity to attend ‘Tower School’ on June 12th in preparation for Field Day. Steve is hoping that by the end of the Amateur class everyone will have their license. The classes are held from 6:30 to 9:00PM at Sanders on Canal St. in Nashua.
