I'm a relatively new ham given my age, although I always "expected" to be one since I was a kid and I played with a 100mw, 1-tube AM transmitter. Retirement gave me more opportunity, and desire to be involved with space gave me motivation. I'm a life member of AMSAT, and I write the flight software for AMSAT's Fox-1 and Golf satellite series. One of my life thrills was being present for the launch of Fox-1a and a few hours later hearing its downlink signal knowing that my software was running it. A few years after getting my General, I passed the Extra test thanks to N1FD class. I was mainly interested in learning more but also changed my call to get back into 1-land while still keeping the letters I have always known I would have in my call: WB1FJ (WBFJ are my initials)
