    Hello Wayne,

I’ve used my Baofeng UV-5R while on ADV motorcycle trips; works great.  Combined with an upgraded antenna (I use the Diamond SRH77CA) and the RepeaterBook app for my mobile phone, it allows me to make contacts while camping.  The HT menu is pretty easy to input a new freq, however I don’t have experience with other brands to know the pro/con differences.  This HT is cheap and if it ever gets wet or damaged, I’m not out of a lot of $$.

I’ve recently purchased a TNC3 that pairs nicely with my HT for APRS.

Firstly, congrats on the Technician license! I would definitely not recommend the baofeng for your use case.

Do you have a budget limitation? If not, and you’re interested in APRS, the Yaesu FT3D is a great HT for you. Yaesu manuals are very easy to follow and programming their HTs is fairly straightforward. If you’d like something a bit cheaper, the FT70 retains digital capability but loses the touchscreen, GPS, and built-in APRS modem.

Let me know what you think and I’m sure others will add their input as well.

    Aron,

Thanks for the links & images.  Very helpful.

The 180 & 210 degrees is the direction the wire will be pointing (attachment points between my house & tree).

    Fred,

Under the banner of ‘Elmering’, can you expand upon your comment “without a significant rework of the network’s IP system”?

I’m just curious what specifically would need to be changed.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

    Fred,

So it would be reasonable to say this would be very difficult to do with ground wave?

    Thanks,

When I find it, I’ll “register” you!

    Thanks, CTB

Developers of properties with HOA’s are required by state law to develop CC&R’s and I believe they are required to file them with, probably, the Secretary of State’s office. (A lot of weasel words in here, since I haven’t looked at the statute in years.) That could be another resource if someone has the time.

I’ve submitted my support for the bill, and provided Fred with a copy of my CC&R.   The language in my agreement forbid all antennas (not protected by OTARD).   I have had to resort to temporary, stealthy setups.   It’s been one of the biggest barriers for me to commit to participating in ARES or other public service operations.

Hopefully we will be successful and get this one through!

Since this was a virtual hearing there may be an electronic record somewhere on the House web site. Some committees have been recording their hearings for a few years. So you might be able to see/hear the testimony and committee questions.

I now live in Maine, so I’m out of the NH process. However, I testified on the original bill when introduced a couple of years ago. That bill was very similar to the bill before Congress at the time. I still urged support for the original bill on the basis that it was a start and you have to use and MAINTAIN your skills and equipment to maximize your effectiveness in an emergency.

I took a look at the current language in the bill. It is superior and more comprehensive than the original bill. My compliments to the sponsor and Fred for their work on this.

Randall reported a another meeting in about a month which usually means that the committee will undertake further sub-committee work on the language before the executive meeting when the full committee will vote to: Pass, Pass with Amendment, Inexpedient to Legislate (ITL), or Interim Study.

You can still indicate your support for the bill after the committee hearing. Contact the Commerce Committee and your local reps with your support.

    Stay safe. 73.
