Congratulations to NARS for a great Field Day effort! I operated several hours on 40 CW Sunday morning. I was hoping you would stop by and work K4VRC, or that I would see a spot for N1FD but no luck. Anyway, hope to find you next year!

Wow!  Congratulations to NARS on making to the big time.  Being featured at the Dayton Hamvention puts you on the global stage.

Also, FB on the 200-member milestone.  Looks like the club is going to need a new place to hold everyone for club meetings, hi.

            Aron,

N1MM supports the Indiana QSO party, 7-land QP, and the NEQP all in one.  Open the “new log in database” link from the FILE tab of N1MM.  Select “QSOparty” from the contest menu in the upper left.  On the left side, there is a drop-down tab to select the various QSO parties.  Scroll down until you find one that says “IN7QPNE” and continue to fill out the rest of the information on the page.  IN7QPNE will allow you to jump around among the three contests.

Congratulations on a job well done!  Neat idea using APRS to send position data.  I remember using a Tiny Tracker 3 APRS interfaced with my HT to lof the “bread crumbs” on my commute to/from work.  I could see where traffic bunched up and where things were moving nicely.

Given the band conditions this weekend, I should have paid more attention to the HAB flight instead of the CQ SSB contest, hi.

Good starting point for 40-meter beam ideas.  The Moxon design posted by Mike, K1WVO has elements just over 50 feet long.  The modified Moxon that Fred shows in the picture is similar to one that Tony, K1KP built.  I wonder if the T-configured end points function as capacitive loading to shorten the element length.  I remember Tony saying that it was empirically derived according to the designer.

I suggest trying a knock-off of the venerable Cushcraft/MFJ 40-2CD antenna.  I had one of these “shorty forty” beams for many years.  The two elements are about 40 feet long on a 20-foot boom.  Each element has capacitive spreaders in an X configuration on each element end.  (The club had a couple at one time that were used every Field Day.)   The manual for the antenna should be available on line at a number of sites.  Attached is a pdf of the coil data when I had to rebuild one after a lightening surge.

Whatever you end up with, remember (1) weight is critical, and (2) fewer parts the better; it’s Field Day, remember!

Way to go, everyone!  NARC has returned as TOP DOG once again!  The lousy conditions actually were ideal for stateside QSOs.  I could not spend as much time as last year but I did manage to work all 13 colonies and WM3PEN but could not get through for GB13COL.  (Might have something to do with that SSB mode, hi.)

                  Congratulations again de TE

Congratulations to the crew for a great effort!  I hope to hear some of you during the New England QSO Party next month.

“a few cows around the vertical may be worth a dB or two of gain”

I guess cow patties on the radial field is pretty conductive.

Suggestion: “Those ARRL Transceiver Reviews – What do They Really Mean?”
The ARRL HF transceiver reviews contain considerable technical performance data that can be overwhelming. When it comes to understanding the parameters shown, in some cases, lower = better while in others, higher = better. Why not show what it means on the air in a contest with a crowded band and strong signals?
K6YC wrote a fine article in September 2014 that analyzes the ARRL measurements of several modern HF transceivers, among them the Elecraft K3 & KX3; ICOMs 7100, 7600, and 7800; FLEX 1500, 3000, and 5000A; ORION II & EAGLE; YAESU FTDX-5000D; and TS-590. In particular, he focused on the effect of phase noise when parked next to a strong (i.e., legal limit) signal.
