Hello NARS!
Winter has finally arrived just in time for Winter Field Day! WFD 2021 is this weekend – Friday, January 29 -> Sunday, January 31st.
Safety First
First and foremost: the weather looks to be frigid here in New England. For the operators in northern climes who intend to operate in the Outdoor category, please be careful. At 20 degrees Fahrenheit with a 10 mph breeze, the equivalent temperature due to wind-chill is 9 degrees! Frostbite can settle-in within 30 minutes at that kind of exposure.
Mittens are your best defense from frostbitten fingers. Also, don’t forget your exposed face – these temps are no laughing matter. Our intention is to operate for multiple hours… so do take care.
Category Discussion
- The OUTDOOR category doesn’t mean we have to suffer on a picnic table out in the wind! Tents, windbreaks, Bob Houses (ice Shanties), enclosed cargo trailers, barns, even temporarily tarped-up bandstands are all perfectly acceptable operating positions for OUTDOOR categories. Be safe, bring plenty of hot soup, hot chocolate, and of course coffee!
- The INDOOR category applies if the structure or vehicle has insulation or permanently installed heat source (like a car, like an RV, like a “rustic” cabin…) these situations are considered INDOOR categories.
- HOME category means you are at home using previously erected antennas, but still can run QRP and/or run off Alternative power.
The Exchange
you: “CQ Winter Field Day, CQ Winter Field Day! QRZ?”
them: “KC1MXF”
you: “KC1MXF, this is N1SFT. We are 1 Hotel in November Hotel!”
them: “N1SFT, this is KC1MXF, we are 2 OSCAR in November Hotel!”
you:” QSL! 73! QRZ?”

WFD Rules
Please review the rules of the event. You may review them online here: WFD2021_Rules
Or you may read the attachment I have attached to this thread.
When reading rules for this, please read to rules directly, and do not try to interpret them. In other words, if it isn’t written – do not read between the lines. Just follow directions, like back in kindergarten! These rules are well written, have been vetted for many years, and any inconsistencies or ambiguities have been hashed out. Let’s just have some fun out there.
Quick reminder schedule:
- Friday, January 29th at 2 pm Eastern = you may begin setting up your site, but you can only use 12 hours to set up.
- Saturday, January 30th at 2 pm Eastern = On the air!
- Sunday, January 31st at 2 pm Eastern = Off the air!
Winter Field Day locator map
Please register your site, and put your “pin on the map” at the WFD Mapping page: WFD Locator Map
The link to add your site is at the bottom of the Locator Map page.
Summary
OK, Let’s have some fun out there this weekend, no matter what your category is, or how many bonus points you are shooting for!
Sincerely,
Craig Bailey

You must be logged in to view attached files.January 31, 2021 at 5:30 pm #111649My son and I braved the cold and operated outside on auxiliary power. We took turns operating a single station, using our own call signs and logged contacts jointly in N1MM. We made unique contacts, never working a station the other one contacted.
What is the proper way to submit this?
- MultiOP?
- This usually uses only one station call sign. We used two. If we don’t submit both calls, some QSOs wont get confirmed.
- ARRL contest rules show exception for family stations
- 3.5.A transmitter used to contact one or more stations may not be subsequently used under any other call during the contest period, except for family stations where more than one call has been issued, and then only if the second call sign is used by a different operator. (The intent of this rule is to accommodate family members who must share a rig and to prohibit manufactured or artificial contacts.)
- Two separate submissions from a family station?
- can we both get the 3000 bonus points for being outside on aux power?
Advice appreciated
Mark (KC1IML)
