The second bullet item on our club’s mission statement is to “Spark Interest among young people in STEM Education and Careers through Amateur Radio”. Many of our members began or enhanced their interest in STEM careers and learning through Amateur Radio and we are working to provide similar experiences for the next generation.

We received a “Thank You” from the Lyndhurst STEM Club for Girls which I want to share with you below.

My name is Stacey Martin and on behalf of the Lyndhurst STEM Club for Girls, I wanted to let the Nashua Area Radio Society know your web page was a big help to our club! This one – https://www.n1fd.org/forums/topic/resources-new-hams/

For the month of November, our club is exploring the history of innovations in science and technology with a ‘famous inventors and inventions’ lesson. The girls are currently learning about the history of the radio, including early broadcasting techniques and amateur radio, and how it impacted society. Your web page led us to some great information on amateur radio to incorporate into our lessons, so the girls requested I reach out and let you know 🙂

As a thank you, I wanted to pass along this reading on the history of the car radio our member Nicole found. It’s a fantastic timeline of radio and audio systems throughout the years, covering the early stages for military use and evolving into the radio we know today with the invention of the vacuum tube. The additional reading on historical broadcasting and the golden age of early radio was really neat for the kids to learn about too. This is it…

Nicole was very excited to share it with you! She thought it would make a wonderful addition. Will you let me know if you’re able to include it for her? I know Nicole would be delighted to see she could help! (We meet on Saturday afternoon, if you can add it by then!) She’s really enjoyed working on this project and is even in the works to get her HAM license!

Looking forward to hearing from you!

I followed the links and found the article interesting as well.  Thanks to Mrs. Martin and Nicole for sharing that with us!  I would also like to thank Aron W1AKI for posting to the RESOURCES FOR NEW HAMS thread in our forums.  The posts date from 2017 and are still relevant today.

Reply to Stacey Martin of the Lyndhurst STEM Club for Girls:

    Hi Stacey and Nicole,

Thank you so much for your input and comment about our forum post on Resources for New Hams.  We love to hear from visitors to our web site and especially young people interested in STEM and Ham Radio.  The post that started the thread dated from 2017. It is wonderful that it is still relevant and useful to you and your club.  I created a forum post myself to share your comments with our members and all who might visit our web site.  You can find the new post here:

I hope that this email finds you all well and we wish the best for you and your group.

Please let the Lyndhurst Stem Club know how much I enjoyed the article on the history of the car radio. For about four years, I worked for the auto  amplifier division of the Bose Corporation of Framingham and Stow, Massachusetts. You might like to know that in our power amps, the audio signal was completely digitized within the amps and special software was used to help perfect every aspect of the sound being sent to the speakers. Such devices were used as RPM motor sensors to help filter out noise produced by the engine. Also, there was a tiny microphone placed in the cabin of the car to help to pick up certain kinds of noises which the software of the power amps also helped to filter out.  As your article indicated, so much wonderful technology has been developed over the years for car audio. Thanks again for sharing. Randall N1KRB.
