Does anyone do any QRP while camping?
I try to do 2 or 3 canoe/kayak camping trips each year. This year we have two trips planned.
Around the 1st week in August on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway, most likely at Allagash lake. This trip can be physically demanding. No motors are allowed within 1 mile of the lake so we have to hump our gear and boats over a well maintained trail. It’s a very remote and quiet area. It’s 70 miles of dirt roads away from the nearest hot pizza or 2M repeater. 1/2 the times that I have been there we were the only party on the lake. The views from the fire tower on Allagash Mountain are amazing.
I have a reservation for one of the larger group sites at Umbagog Lake State Park on Sept. 5-8. Umbagog is a much easier trip. We hire a state motor boat to transport us, our kayaks, and gear to the remote camping site. After that you can go on short kayak day trips, fish, swim, QRP, or just relax. You don’t need stay all 4 nights.
For the SOTA and POTA folks; We pass by Baxter State park on the way to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. You’d have to be crazy to validate nearby Poland Mountain but you can count on my help and support. 🙂 For Umbagog we will be camped a very short distance away from the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge.
Aside from the fixed reservation dates for Umbagog these trips are loosely organized. I’m new to ham and don’t even own any portable gear yet. I’m always looking to invite more people to come and enjoy my other hobby.
