Hello Everyone,
We are working on a significant set of upgrades to the New England AREDN Core Network and the homelab infrastructure here at AB1OC-AB1QB. The project involves the construction and cutover of a new rack of networking, storage, and AI-based video recording equipment.
New AREDN Core RackThe objectives for the new rack include:
- Upgrade to an enterprise-grade high-availability router, firewall, IDS/IPS, and optical network
- Eliminate all single points of failure related to AREDN networking and services
- Add an AI-Based Camera Video Recorder
- Consolidate two existing racks into one
The AI-based camera system and the upgraded power system are currently installed and operational in the new rack.

AI-Network Video RecorderThe goal for our club effort on Saturday and through next week is to install a new enterprise-grade high-availability firewall, IDS/IPS, and optical aggregation switches, and turn up the new core in parallel with the existing one.
We plan to migrate our Server and Storage systems to the new core and begin cutting over AREDN and other services next week. The project will provide opportunities to:
- Install and configure enterprise networking gear from Ubiquity
- Learn about high-availability networks and power systems
- Install and configure with fiber optic networking equipment
- Upgrade storage capacity in an operational Network Video Recorder (NVR)
- Install AI-enhanced cameras and test using AI-based search tools
- Learn to work with and splice fiber optic cables
- And more
We invite NARS members to join us on Saturday and/or on any day next week. We are planning to meet at our QTH on Saturday after our club breakfast (around 10:30 am). Work will continue next week, beginning at 10 am each day.
Our address is good on QRZ.com. if you don’t have access to qrz.com or need directions, please email me at [email protected].
As always, lunch will be provided. We hope to see you on Saturday and throughout next week.

Fred, AB1OC
December 14, 2025 at 4:15 pm #159330Frank, KC1ONH, and I made quite a bit of progress on building the new core system on Saturday. Today is about fine-tuning what we installed on Saturday to optimize cooling.
Frank and I are planning to configure the new core and get it operational on Monday (tomorrow, 12/15), starting at 9 am at my QTH. We’re also going to set up Frank’s router to get him on the AREDN mesh.
Folks are invited to join us in working on the project tomorrow.
December 14, 2025 at 7:19 pm #159332I picked up one of the MikroTik hAP ac2 routers and just came in; hoping to get AREDN’s firmware flashed and then also try to connect up. I do need to figure out network segregation strategy a bit as my network is in the 10.0.0.0 subnet; so need to make sure I don’t collide.
December 15, 2025 at 7:11 pm #159333FB Emily. BTW, we are having a Winter Field Day prep session this Saturday at our ATH (AB1OC-AB1QB). Several folks will be here to set up software and antennas in prep for Winter Field Day.
I am also planning to host an AREDN Router party on Saturday. If you can make it, bring your router, and we’ll help you get it going.
vy 73,
Fred, AB1OC
