While many people got valuable experience operating in the field (sometimes literally) at National Parks during 2016’s National Parks On The Air (NPOTA) special event, others had a lot of fun “chasing” those activations from their home QTH, learning more about how to use their equipment to work stations across the US. As I briefly mentioned during the N1FD 10m Chat Net tonight, during an SSB contact with NN4SA (the NASA radio club at the Marshall Spaceflight Center in Alabama), I found out that radio clubs at various NASA facilities are holding a NASA On The Air (NOTA) special event that runs from 11-Dec-2017 (the 45th anniversary of the launch of Apollo-17) through 27-Dec-2018 (the 50th anniversary of the splashdown of Apollo-8. These activations will use any and all modes, including digital modes like PSK31 and FT8, and bands from 23cm through 160m!
Information about the event, including the rules (yes, they are keeping score!) and a list and map of the participating NASA club are here: https://nasaontheair.wordpress.com/. You can check your score online here: http://nota.ka0s.net/. (My one QSO so far is listed already!) Have fun!
p.s. Just one of the reasons to commemorate the splashdown of Apollo-8 is that it brought us the famous ‘Earthrise’ photo which gave people all over the world a new perspective on this planet, our home: https://www.nasa.gov/topics/history/features/apollo_8.html.
