As most of you know, the ARRL was founded to create a relay network to send messages across the US by amateur radio. Back then, a message had to be relayed from one station to another, and it took at least a few “hops” for a message to go coast-to-coast. Message traffic handling is still a valuable service provided by amateur radio operators during emergency situations. Therefore, we practice message traffic handling every week with our Sunday evening VHF Repeater and 10m nets. We also practice it during Field Day with 3 fun activities which can earn us 300 points!
(1) Traffic handling (10 points for each of up to 10 messages): The messages must be sent from or received by N1FD at the Field Day site by amateur radio RF signals. Received messages must be delivered to the intended recipient by any available means. In most cases, the recipient will be someone at the Field Day site and the message can be hand-delivered.
To make things simpler, these messages need to use ARRL message traffic forms which have blanks for all of the important information so that nothing is forgotten.
We will need 1-2 teams of rovers with vehicles and 2m FM HTs with magmount or whip antennas to go off-site (someplace outside of our Field Day site circle, such as the nearest donut shop), and 1-2 teams at the Satellite VHF station in the pavilion at the park.
Meet at the time below (EDT) to receive further instructions and the messages to transmit, or blank forms for the messages to be received.
Scheduled date and time: Saturday: Instructions 3:30 PM, Activity 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM
Rain date: Sunday: Instructions 10:15 AM, Activity 10:45 AM – 11:45 AM
Scheduled frequency: 146.580 MHz FM Simplex
Backup frequency (in case the other one is in use): 145.580 MHz FM Simplex
The following special messages do NOT count for the 10 points, because each of them counts for a special 100 point bonus!
(2) Outgoing special message (100 points): We will send and receive a message to the ARRL NH Section Manager or the ARRL NH Section Emergency Coordinator. The message can then be delivered by e-mail. It will include something like this: (X-ray is used to indicate a period.)
NASHUA AREA RADIO SOCIETY AT KEYES MEMORIAL PARK, MILFORD, NH X number PARTICIPANTS X number ARES OPERATORS X
(3) Incoming special message (100 points): We will copy the bulletin sent from the ARRL by W1AW. The day, time, frequency, and mode are to be determined. We can copy it by hand from voice, but if someone can use PSK31 and it is available on our satellite station, it might be easier to record the message digitally and store on a USB memory stick.
No repeater usage is allowed for these messaging activities.

I’m really looking forward to us working together on Field Day!
