Our trip to Mount Monadnock is this coming Saturday, May 25th for our Summits on the Air (SOTA) and Parks on the Air (POTA) activation. Right now the weather is looking fantastic – partly cloudy and 70!

The SOTA event is a hike up only activation – there is not a road to the top. I have not climbed this mountain before, but have been told it is a strenuous hike – so please make sure you’re up to the task! Also, it’s always a good idea to not hike alone so we will be meeting at the Park Headquarters at 8:00 am. We’ll plan to leave at 8:30 am sharp. If you are planning on attending please reply to this thread so I have an idea how many to expect. If you could like any equipment you’ll be bringing and if you would be willing to share that would be great as well. Anyone that does not have radio equipment but would like to attend we will make sure you get on the air!

We are planning to hike the White Dot trail for the ascent and descend by hiking the White Cross trail.

Anyone wanting to do the POTA activation should also meet at the Park Headquarters no later than 8:30 am. From there, you can decide to operate in the parking lot or any other location in the park. Please respond to this thread if you are planning on attending and if you have radio equipment you would be willing to share.

I will be bringing my KX2 with a Buddipole (and the new shock-corded mast) and a HT with Elk antenna for VHF/UHF. I am more than happy to share!

I’ll be there with my KX3, buddipole vertical kit, and DMR equipment.

The weather is still looking great for tomorrow’s SOTA/POTA. I haven’t heard from anyone interested in just the POTA and we should have around a 1/2 dozen of us for the hike up for the SOTA! I’m looking forward to testing out the buddipole on my shock-corded mast!

See you all at the Park Headquarters at 8:00. We’ll hit the trail at 8:30!

I, along with the XYL (KB1UFN) and our 8-year-old Kara are planning on joining for the hike up.   I doubt we’ll have any equipment other than a couple of HTs, as I’m not really well set up for portable operation, but looking forward to it anyway.

So, we got to the trailhead about 8:30 AM (it’s impossible not to be late with a kid) and didn’t see anyone familiar, so figured everyone had already started up and set out ourselves — made it up to the top by about 11 (again, kid 🙂 but didn’t see any radio-activity (although I heard a few other peaks reporting in on 520). Well, no problem, I set up my 900MHz Yagi and had fun seeing how far I could get out with my 2.5W Alinco HT. (Answer: at least to Boston!) Didn’t formally activate the summit, but had a few nice 33cm QSOs (only repeaters, no bites on the simplex calling frequencies unfortunately), conversations with people curious about what I was doing, and lunch. Kid got antsy after a couple hours so we started down again, only to meet the rest of the group coming up… oh well. Hope everything went well and lots of contacts were had!

            Hi Adam,

Sorry we missed you on Saturday – I didn’t see your post until we returned and we didn’t hit the tail until about 8:45 as one of our members was running late. We also hiked up about a third of the way and had to return before going back up, so we were running very late.

At any reate, we do have a a couple more POTA/SOTAs planned so hopefully you’ll join us on those. The one coming up on Mount Kearsarge should  be good one as it takes place during the VHF/UHF contest. 6m and up should be pretty good. HF is also a lot fun on the peaks!
