I was trying to get my D72 set up for APRS (again) while traveling to Dayton tomorrow, but I could not get it to beacon AT ALL. EVER. I can’t even guess how many web pages and menu items I looked at but nothing.
I finally noticed that there was a constant hiss coming from the radio. What do you know, the squelch was open (from my satellite work, I suppose). After closing down the squelch, suddenly the beacon started working. Bizzare–no idea why those things would have anything to do with each other, but just in case it happens to you, here it is.
Sounds like it doesn’t want to transmit on top of another station. Usually, when the squelch is opened that means there’s another signal present. It seems to me like a reasonable design. Too bad that rule breaks down if you’ve just been working satellites…
