Just a reminder that we have a SOTA hike to Mount Kearsarge Saturday July 17th  Clicking on the hyperlink will bring you right to the story for the full details and the rest of the schedule for 2021. I’m hoping for good weather and decent propagation but you never know. If Saturday is a total washout then Sunday is the rain date. The call  for cancelling will be in the comments section of this post . Bring a sweater or fleece  and a rain jacket just in case it can get pretty breezy and cool in the mountains even if we manage to get bright sunny skies.

The plan is to meet at the base of the auto road at Rollins State park 1066 Kearsarge Mountain Road Warner, NH 03278. I just went to their website here and they recommend a reservation so plan on calling them at this number  Phone: 603-456-3808 as walk in parking spaces are limited.

Anyone that wants to hike up from the other side and meet us here is the physical address of Winslow State park 475 Kearsarge Mountain Rd, Wilmot, NH 03287. We will most likely be operating from the picnic area at the end of the auto road. If  anyone that wants to operate from the actual summit it is only .5 mile away. I’m not sure how long a hike it is from Winslow State Park.

As far as radios an ht with an upgraded  rubber duck can get you surprising performance from even a modest rise in altitude so if that’s all you have bring it and try it out.  Fred will have his 6 meter station with him and I’ll have my  6 meter qrp rig and a new homebrew Moxon antenna ( I haven’t even had a chance to check it on an analyzer) I’m itching to try this antenna out. If we’re lucky and get some  e-skip on 6 it could be an  interesting day.

As a final note if you’ve read this far and it sounds like  I’m speaking another language with all this talk of POTA and such then you should plan on attending Tuesday’s Tech night. The topic is Portable Operating and Jamie AC1DC will fill you in on everything you need to know to operate portable.

Hope to see you on Saturday! If the club breakfast was any indicator we can expect a good sized crowd.

        IMPORTANT INFORMATION

I will rewrite the above  article later on tonight but the phone number I gave you above gets you information on where to go online to get a  a day use pass. Instead of deluging Gail with calls I’ll save you (and her) the trouble. Please go to this link to get to the NH State parks info site.

At this website you can pick the day and number of vehicle occupants  to  get the pass you will need for parking at the picnic grounds at the end of the auto road.

Anyone going to the SOTA from Nashua or Mass areas and interested in car pooling? We could meet at the Park & Ride off exit 8.

The weather report for this weekend includes a high probability of thunder storms , especially in the mountains . After talking it over with Fred we agreed it was prudent to  postpone the SOTA POTA hike for safety reasons.  The hike will be rescheduled next weekend. I’m working on my work schedule to get next Saturday off. This would give the flexibility to postpone it a day and still get the hike in . I will announce the finalized  date in the next day or two. Thanks for hanging in there .

Thank you Jim for organizing this event.  We had beautiful weather on the 24th.  As an observer I was able to get lots of ideas on the equipment needed to operate a POTA/SOTA event.  I am looking forward to getting such equipment together, but it may be a while before I do so.  Till then it’s wonderful to get out into the mountain environment and enjoy being around people doing things they enjoy.
