Ham radio operators will be providing communications for a high-speed performance automobile rally near Rumford, Maine. You’re invited to help.
On Friday & Saturday, July 28 & July 29, the New England Region of the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) will sanction a high-speed performance rally, to be run on private logging roads in Rumford, Maine.
The Maine Forest Rally is part of the U.S. national series of performance or “stage” rallies, and attracts teams from around the U.S. and Canada. Competitors drive their cars as fast as possible over closed sections of unpaved road, called stages, ranging from 5 to 20 miles in length. They then transit, or drive at legal speeds, to the next competition stage. The majority of competitors drive production-based cars: Audis, Mazdas, Toyotas, etc., modified with full race-car safety equipment. Competitors can attain speeds of over 90 MPH over twisty, slippery, gravel roads!
Your help, as a ham operator, is needed to provide communications for this event. Safety is the utmost concern, and ham radio has been providing safety-related comms for this and other events for many years.
The event runs from roughly 1 PM to 11 PM on Friday July 28 and from 8 AM to 6 PM on Saturday July 29. Communication will take place using 2 meter FM. If you would like to sign up to help, or would like more information, please contact Gary Grebus, K8LT at (603)673-8299 evenings, or (603)884-1426 (days), or via Email to glg@k8lt.ampr.org.
