For The Ladies

One of the reasons I so enjoy the fellowship within NARC is that there are so many diverse individuals and interests in our club. From going to the Saturday morning breakfasts I learned that there is quite an active interest among the distaff side of the club in crafting and arts. Also, my late wife Judy loved quilts, and her mother, Eula Short, a very gentle and soft-spoken lady from Southwestern Missouri, has spent a lifetime piecing together absolute works of art. When I saw the ladies of the club working with and discussing quilts and patterns and bringing to breakfast projects that they were working on, I felt that perhaps there might be some web sites which would interest them, and perhaps even interest some of you more macho types.

Try running a search on any of the popular Internet Search Engines on the words "making quilts", and you will spend the next several hours "surfing till you drop". Here's a starter for fun: http://www.quiltersworkshop.com/default.htm . While this is a commercial site, there are some photos and patterns which ought to give you ideas. And the search engine had a zillion more to look at.

How about a search on the words "dried floral arrangements"? Here's another commercial site with lots of photos to give you ideas for your own arrangements: http://www.victoriasgarden.com/

For you shutterbugs, try a search on your favorite subject. I tried ‘nature photography’ and got many hits. Here's an interesting one: http://www.fredparker.com/nat.htm.

My best friend, Vollie Miller, WB4TDB, lives in the little Tennessee town of Dickson, west of Nashville. His lovely wife Rita took up the art of stained glass window and tiffany lamp making a few years ago. Based on the photos Vollie and Rita have shared with me, the results of her work are stunning. For a truly visual feast, follow this link: http://www.tcp-ip.or.jp/~itashiro/.

Chris and I are truly "discovering" the joy of growing, preserving and cooking with herbs grown in our little back yard garden we started this year. We've grown and harvested Thyme, Rosemary, Mint, Sweet Basil, Chives and others. The following website has links to a host of other sites which focus on herb gardening: http://www.decatur.public.lib.ga.us/local\herbs\herbs.html.

Speaking of gardening, if you are interested in making a greenhouse quickly and inexpensively, here's a link to follow: http://www.bae.ncsu.edu/bae/programs/extension/publicat/postharv/green/green.html.

Well, you get the idea. Have fun surfing the web. Next month we'll take a look at some sites of interest to collectors.
