The SEC-1212 is a nice compact package, perfect for setting a mobile transceiver on top of, or running the numerous ham-shack peripherals. The SEC-1212 measures 7” wide, 8.25” long, and 2.2” high and weighs in at a feather-light 3 pounds. Perfect for running the typical 50 watt mobile transceiver, the SEC-1212 can deliver 13.8VDc and current ratings of 12 amps continuous and 15 amps at 50% duty cycle. Current limiting at 15.5 amps and overvoltage protection at 16 volts are also features built into the unit.
I didn’t perform any sophisticated tests, however I did put the unit under full load and listened for noise within the ham bands between 1.8 & 54MHz and 2 meters and 70 cm. and found none.
Last but certainly not least, the most impressive feature of the SEC-1212 is the price. Common selling price for the unit is $79.95, which compares favorably to the much heavier, less capable, Astron model RS-12A which is rated at only 12 amps intermittent and amps continuous and weighs much more.
Editor’s note: Hopefully this will become a regular column in the Bull. Besides being a good source of information, it helps Chris to remember where he’s from so someday he’ll find his way back home. For those of you who’ve been sleeping during 1997, Chris left Nashua earlier this year to become the manager at Ham Radio Outlet in Delaware. Drop him a line at 800-644-4476.
