Our Next Meeting ...

NARC Bottom Feeder

for Programs

"Mr. Disk Drive"

So that’s how they get big silicon crystals? Thanks, Mike you did a great job. That was NARC’s own Mike Graham, NE1V, who showed us how huge single crystal silicon ingots are created. Lots of heat and patience.

This month’s program will be brought to the club by another “favorite son”. Brooks Tanner, KC1PD is planning to enlighten us on the finer points of modern computer disk drive technology. Being on the Micropolis payroll, he knows, first hand, the latest technology being used in today’s hard disk drives. He’s going to give us an historical accounting of the advances in this fascinating field of electronic gadgets, starting with how a disk drive works, continuing with the changes in technology which has allowed increased information storage capacity. He’s even going to give us some definitions for all those funny sounding words and phrases we’ve heard. Things like analog, “scuzzy”, stepper, and flying high, no, no, I mean flying height. So, Brooks, how did the disk drive wizards go from a full disk holding 10 megabytes to one which can hold more than 25 gigabytes in 10 short years?

You don’t have to be a member of the club to join in the fun at the Nashua Public Library for the next meeting.

See you at the meeting! de Jack, WB4MDC
