Wideband HF Techniques

Thanks to Bob Coburn (W1JJO), editor of "OFFICIAL" scanner guides. Bob covered the up and coming in the commercial side of the VHF/UHF bands. Trunking radios, higher frequencies, digitally scrambled signals are here or on their way. There's likely to be a fair amount of surplus VHF equipment out there as police and fire departments upgrade. Also discussed was the amount of effort that goes into creating a scanner guide and maintaining it. Often the information is harder to obtain than one might think. With Bob was Steven Donnell, WA1YKL, who discussed scanner hardware and scanner modifications. Thanks to both for an educational presentation on what's going on outside our bands.

On the slate for the November meeting is David Herrick, AB7Q, who will talk about wideband HF techniques. "Doctor Dave" has a number of patents covering all aspects of RF engineering and is rumored to be able to visualize E and H plane antenna patterns in his head. His latest creation is an HF frequency hopping radio that can send and receive data at 9600 baud with more reliability than any CW operator. This is one high tech presentation you won't want to miss.

As always, I look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting. If you have an idea for a future meeting topic, let me know.
