The Secretary's ReportMinutes from the August 28th ExecutiveBoard meeting and the September 11th Club Meeting
Respectfully submitted by Jim Denhup, N1NYG, and Fletcher Seagroves, N1MEO | |
Old Business:
There was no Secretary's report due to the absence of the secretary.
Jim Heedles, WW1Y, reported that the treasurer report was about the same as that presented at the August club meeting. The PSNH bill for field day was in and was a little under budget. A Levin/Sherman motion to accept the Treasurer report was passed.
There was no Program's report due to the absence of the Programs Director.
The membership report was given by Joel Levin, KD1ON. Joel indicated that newsletters would be sent to new hams in the Nashua area . The practice, which used to obtain new ham information from the local Volunteer Examiner team, was discontinued when the ARRL/VEC stated that candidate information was not public domain data. New license data can now be obtained direct from the FCC database via the INTERNET.
Fletcher Seagroves, N1MEO, reported that no training classes were going on. He indicated that one will be starting in the fall.
Stu Sherman, N1STY, provided the activities report. Stu is still collecting data on coffee cups for a future fund raising activity. Everything looks good for the Boy Scout Jamboree to be held on September 23rd. Club advertising brochures, AKA NARCprop, need to be supplied. A Levin/Heedles motion was passed to authorize the expenditure of no more than fifty dollars ($50.00) to have additional printed. Jim, WW1Y took responsibility to have them printed and supplied to Russ, KA1OTN before the event.
New Business:
Don Dillaby, KA1GOZ, agreed to contact members of the club to create a three member nominating committee. The committee would solicit club members to run for the 1996 Board of Directors.
There was no additional new business and the meeting was adjourned at 2035.
Program Director Chris Garon, KA1SIE, introduced our guest speaker R. Dean Straw, K1DG. Dean is the editor of the ARRL Antenna Handbook and other antenna manuals, and presented the highlights from his New England ARRL Convention presentation "Local Terrain and Its Effect on the Launch of HF Signals. His talk focused upon the three elements needed to plan an HF contest station scientifically: 1. The range of elevation angles needed to capture the signals of interest, 2. The key antenna performance parameters affecting these signals. 3. The effect of the local terrain upon these signals.
An hour of very technical discussion ensued with many graphs and charts detailing the elevation angles for most contest bands and how to best utilize them. For a given terrain, changing the antenna height will improve the launch angle profile. Most antenna programs used for predicting the results of an antenna system assume that the area of interest is over flat ground. They ignore the effects of diffraction upon the radio signals. Dean has written a computer program that factors in the effects of diffraction. Dean graciously left a copy of his presentation and a copy of his antenna program YTAD "Yagi Terrain Analysis, with Diffraction" with me. If anyone wants a copy of the program, bring a formatted floppy, labeled with your name, to the next meeting and I will copy his program on it and bring it back to you at our next meeting. It was great learning how the premier contesters optimize their antenna systems!!! Thanks Dean!
Club Business:
The Jim Heedles, WW1Y, treasurer's report described the latest changes to the club's financial statement including the August 31, 1995 treasury balance of $1,147.95. All Field Day expenses have not yet been received. A Sherman/C. Gaffey motion to accept the treasurer's report was approved.
There was no membership report.
The Stu Sherman, N1STY, Activities Report listed the usual Thursday night Pizza Party and the Saturday breakfast. In addition, Russ Santos gave a brief overview of the preparations underway for the radio demonstration at the Boy Scout Jamboree to be held on September 23, 1995. Everything is proceeding well. Jim, WW1Y will provide club brochures, and the club banner will be provided.
Chris Garon, KA1SIE, in his program report reminded us of the upcoming October program: Bob Coburn, editor for the Official Scanner Guide will provide interesting areas for listening.
The club members passed the Pauline Wells/Heedles motion to adjourn to coffee and donuts at approximately 8:22 PM.
